Thunderbird at Spring Lake Golf Club
About
Situated in the heart of Long Island, Spring Lake Golf Club sprawls across 180 acres next to its namesake lake. There are two courses available at the club, the 18-hole Thunderbird and the nine-hole Sandpiper Course. The Thunderbird Course is characterized by its massive greens, most of which are lined with bunkers. Some of the fairways are wide and forgiving, but there are some narrower ones that require extra attention. At 7,035 yards from the back tees, there are a few holes that long hitters will enjoy but there are also some that will test your short-game skills. With the diversity among all of the holes, you may find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. Although Spring Lake's Sandpiper Course is only nine holes, it's just as intimidating as the Thunderbird.

Spring lake
Tee boxes and greens in excellent condition ! Very tough greens . Fast and challenging !!! Def would come back and give it a second go ! Can play as long as you like .. Little over 6000 yards for the occasional golfer , the 6500 blue tees for the average golfer and 7000 for the real serious boys ! Many traps And woods ! Fairways are forgiving but tree line isn't ! Staff was great and pleasant and a must come back !
Gr8 course with large greens.
Wld've given an excellent rating for overall rating and cost, if they did not charge me for my nephew who did not play.
Good as Usual
I have always liked this golf course, very fair and VERY challenging esp from the Gold tees. The one thing I will say is the greens are always slow here. They look and roll GREAT, just very slow.
Because of the 12 inches of rain, the first hole on the Sandpiper is completely under water (except for the green). I am not a fan of the Sandpiper 9 anyway, but I would give it 2-4 weeks before that hole becomes playable.
Flooded
The greens were in great shape other very slow. Needed to be cut. First hole of the piper was completely flooded. 10th hole of Thunderbird was converted from a par 4 to par 3.
No rebate on the expense. Cod only at 17 holes
good course
Very beautiful course and conditions to good.
Also green very fast..
would go again
Course was nice staff was friendly. Pace was a bit slow. But it was a weekend. Also golfers didnt maintain there mess. Many unwanted divot marks on greens and on fairways.
Didn't understand what I was purchasing
I thought I had paid for 18 holes but it was only 9,when I had used golf now befor I always had 18,assumed ,never saw or bothered to look for the fine print,I was very disappointed,it was a very nice course,Spring Lake
Course needed a mow
We just had 3 days of rain and the greens needed a mow and to be rolled. The were soft, so I held the green, but very slow.
The greens where fantastic
We had a very enjoyable round we will be back agian
Defintely coming back
The course was in really good condition. The holes were pretty straight and few if any hazards or water. There was no starter so I was told just to head out. I ended up pairing myself up with another group to speed things up. The pace was decent and there was a ranger checking on the pace.
The greens were ridiculously slow and I had a hard time with long putts. The fairways were average and missed shots easy to find. If this place wasn't so far from my home I'd come here more often.
They have electric carts equipped with onboard tablets showing hole info and GPS yardage info. Just for that I should bump this up to 5 stars. But this is not championship course so it gets a 4 but a highly recommended one.
Outing
Showed up 45 minutes before our tee time and found out their was an outing on the course we were supposed to start on. The staff offered us to start on the sandpiper "if they could, they would LET us play the thunderbird back nine."
After nine on the sandpiper we checked with the staff and they said it would be an hour and a half to get out on the course we had a golf now tee time for. We played the sandpiper 9 hole course twice and that course was in terrible shape and doesn't compare to the thunderbird.
The staff is still the same, now personality at all.
A darn shame because the thunderbird course is a great layout. Play here as a last resort.
Nice course, but bar closes too early
Very nice and fair traditional course, always in good condition. My only complaint and this goes for many long Island courses, the bar closes too early.
nice course if you like to wait and wait and wait
Greens, tees and fairways set in great shape. Some of the rough areas were sparse and the traps needed to be raked.
Staff was very friendly and professional, for the most part. One wait staff sever however was expressing her displeasure at being dissed by management for shifts given her vs another employee. Very hard to listen to.
The ranger was nearly clueless. Had to leave after 4 hours and 45 minutes and skipped 17th and 18th holes because it would have added at least another 45 minutes to the round. But when we were driving in through the 17th fairway, there was a foursome two groups ahead that was so far behind, the 18th hole was COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!. How does that happen with a ranger on the golf course? Since 18 is a par 5, if they had been told to pick up or better, get off, it would have cut the round by 20 minutes if not an hour. Who knows how long these guys were playing with empty holes ahead of them??? Certainly not the ranger!
The course was great. The staff had some holes that need to be filled. No pun intended!
great deal, great course!
course is in great shape.....i've heard this gc has been owned by the same family for 45 years and their commitment shows in how well this place is maintained.....i think they are working on a couple of greens and repair, but i am sure it will be great in the end.....this place is a MUST play for any New Yorker and visitor!
Great course at a great Golf Now discount.
Golf Now had an excellent early tee time price of $34, $25 less than normal, for a single. Course was in spectacular condition and rate of play was very good. Could have finished in 3 hours if I played better.
Great Place to golf
no pacers to shove people in and move them around as fast as possible so they can make as much as possible...actually enjoyable.
Father's Day Capsam Tournament
We found the overall conditions to be excellent , however the rough was a little too long for 15-20 handicappers. The greens were great and for Father's Day pace of play was good.
Wonderful
Greens were in great shape. Course was extremely well manicured. Staff was very nice. Cart girls were very polite and waited for you to approach your next hole. Can't think of any complaints. Booked through golfnow. Couldn't beat the price for a late Saturday morning. Can't wait to play it again
Very Green, pretty, fair test of golf
I like this course. It was very green. Fairways were great. Greens are huge but were a little slow for my liking. That being said I putted well on them. The Cups definitely need to be cut sharper! Good test of golf ability. Will be back
The course was in good shape
This course was in good shape. The best greens I played on so far this year.
