Thunderbird at Spring Lake Golf Club
About
Situated in the heart of Long Island, Spring Lake Golf Club sprawls across 180 acres next to its namesake lake. There are two courses available at the club, the 18-hole Thunderbird and the nine-hole Sandpiper Course. The Thunderbird Course is characterized by its massive greens, most of which are lined with bunkers. Some of the fairways are wide and forgiving, but there are some narrower ones that require extra attention. At 7,035 yards from the back tees, there are a few holes that long hitters will enjoy but there are also some that will test your short-game skills. With the diversity among all of the holes, you may find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. Although Spring Lake's Sandpiper Course is only nine holes, it's just as intimidating as the Thunderbird.

First Time There and Will be Back
The course (Thunderbird) was in fantastic shape and is a beautiful course. The people in the pro shop were very friendly and accommodating. No two holes were the same, with each presenting unique challenges. The greens were fast and necessitate a good short game because there is very little flat space, (with a few of the greens tiered.) The only bad thing I can say is that if you are golfing in the afternoon, some of the tee shots on the back 9 can be difficult due to the sun. This is one of my new favorite public courses on the Island, and I'm excited to try the 9 hole course too.
Enjoyed
Course was in very good condition for this time of the year. The greens were the best on the island so far this year, a little slow but very smooth. Played in 3 hours and 40 minutes but teed off at 2:45pm on a great weather day.
BEAUTIFUL OLD SCHOOL LAYOUT
I have been playing the course for years and it is always in great shape. I am a 6 handicap and play from the tips on all courses and have to say that the tips on the thunderbird course are probably the most fun to play on the island. The course plays much different from the tips as trees come into play on almost every tee shot which will force you to shape almost every tee shot. The greens run beautifully and there is plenty of grass everywhere on the course. Most golfers that play here are of average or poor skill which does slow down the pace of play. If you are trying to play a 4 hour round, I recommend getting out very early in the morning. Overall this course is top 5 public course on island to me.
SLOOOOOOOW
pace of play very bad
foursome in front of us fell behind by two holes at times
Terrific conditions, unbearable pace
The course is in fantastic shape compared to many others at this time of year. But our round took 5:20 (yes, that's five hours and twenty minutes), which is inexcusable in light of the number of players that were actually out on the course. They badly need a ranger to keep people moving and/or playing off the correct tees. I won't be back until I hear that this has improved; it made an otherwise beautiful day unbearable.
Challenging Course
Course may not be to long but a challenging tree line. Greens in great shape, usually play here twice a month and staff is absolutely awesome. They are always willing to help and offering more specials this year is a plus.
Nice round
Tough greens make for a challenging round. Course was in good condition considering how early in the season.
Winter golf
Our foursome played 18 in 3 1/2 hours cool crisp day.
Great course and great value
This course is always in excellent condition and well maintained . The staff is always friending and accommodating. A great value in the middle os the island
In great shape
You would think it's spring. So clean and maintained great!!!!
golfcart
Very nice course no complaints what so ever. Just a small issue about cart policy, it states that your cart is included. I did indeed get a cart but i asked if i could play round with a single cart as opposed to sharing this particular day, its not that I'm anti-social but this day i maybe would have had to stop my round earlier than normal so i asked politely if it was possible, nope that i can't do , you have to share anyway no biggie nice day anyway, but i thought maybe this day they could have bent the rule . there were probably 15 carts available
very nice course
enjoyed playing the course , I play about 15 times per year
SDT
Such a beautiful day and conditions on the course....too bad the pace of play was slow.
This course is a must play!!!!
Spring Lake is one of my all time faves, been playing here for some 25 years. Always in immaculate condition, it plays long with slick true greens and thick ruff. It's a great track and a must play⛳️
Overall nice course!
Overall this is a nice course but do not like hitting off fairways at this course. Sometimes can be windy there but was nice this past time. Challenging course. The driving range surface could use some work.
spring lake cant wait to get back there
excellent course well maintained very good experience well recommended
Great!
First time playing there and definitely not the last.....everything about the course was great!
Walked off ...slow play...no management on course
1st nine holes took almost 3 hours on a Wednesday late AM tee time? Seriously? Impossible to play with any rhythm. Walked off after 9 holes. No one attempted to control pace of play. Just pack 'em in, put 'em on, and collect your greens fees and cart fees. Nice. First time I've been, last time I'll be.
caught at a bad time
we played on a day when the greens were being punched. so the front nine on thunderbird closed. The back nine played very well. we finished off on the sand piper. The first hole is still under repair, so it's being played as short par 3. it's going to take some time for that to clean up. recomend waiting til the thunderbird is punched and closed up.
Back to glory
Course has regained excellence after previous decline. Good recovery from recent flooding. USGA Course rating should be reviewed.
