Michigan stakes a claim as one of the richest golf-per-capita states in the U.S., and its largest city of Detroit is no exception to the Wolverine State's golf-mad populous. The greater Detroit area, making up most of southeast Michigan, is known as the Motor City and is home to Oakland Hills Country Club, designed by Donald Ross and the host of the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. Ross built many more area courses, and while there are a handful of historic private clubs dating back to the glory days of the Big 3 automakers, affordable and accessible golf rules the roost these days.
