Establish Handicap Through Virginia State Golf Association
With more than 200 resort and daily fee golf courses throughout the state, Virginia isn't just for lovers - it's for Golf lovers! At the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, hop on the Birdwood Course, a treat in the Spring for its in-bloom azalea and rhododendron, and all year-round for its challenging, undulating fairway meadows.

Public greens fees can climb to the $60 range, but discounts and packages are always floating around. Up north in Triangle, Va. the Forest Greens Golf Club presents a pretty layout and a worthy course at a reasonable rate (never climbing over $53 with a cart).

Virginia also might be the place you choose to establish your handicap, which you think is too difficult to do when you don’t belong to a country club. Fear not: some State golf associations will often let you form your own club. The Virginia State Golf Association permits you to start an associate club, or one without real estate, with 10 or more members. You and your buddies can create bylaws, apply for membership, play on Virginia golf courses throughout the state and begin submitting your scores for handicapping purposes. Your club will be able to reserve Virginia tee times throughout the state to continue to work on your game even if you do not have your own golf course. Just make sure the treasurer isn't a crook!
