Wildwinds Golf Links is a hidden gem in the rural countryside of Rockwood, Ontario, about 11 miles north of Guelph. What initially started as a modest 7- and then 9-hole layout has become an impressive 18-hole track that has even garnered some national acclaim in Canada. Players come from all over the region to play this tranquil, fun and affordable layout. Wildwinds Golf Links is very playable for ordinary golfers but also deceptively difficult for skilled players. The course has appeared on Golf Advisor s list of Top Courses in Canada and Score Golf, Canada s leading golf publication, has even deemed one of its par 3s among the Great White North s finest short holes. Local course architect Shawn Watters built the present incarnation of course in 2003. Wildwind Golf Links spreads out on rolling terrain with numerous hills. The course, which skirts the Speed River, provides an almost even mix of tree-lined and open and exposed, links-style holes. Stretches of each type alternate throughout the round. Since the hills are not severe, many players opt to walk when they play Wildwind Golf Links. With four sets of tee markers (plus a combo option), the layout can be taken on from as short as 4,618 yards and as long as 6,015 yards. Don t let the 6,000-yard maximum distance deceive you. Wildwinds Golf Links is a par-70 that has some bite. The main defenses of the course are wind and the greens. Additionally, all but one of the five par 3s are long. On the other hand, the three par 5s present scoring opportunities. Though water comes into play on a handful of holes, no forced carries are required. Similarly, despite Wildwind Golf Link s hills, you won t face any blind tee shots. The greens are large, slick, and undulating. They normally roll fast and are tough to read. Play at the club winds down in late October but the course typically is able to stay open into November. Practice facilities at Wildwind Golf Links are limited to a putting green and chipping area. The facility does not have a driving range. The clubhouse features a pro shop, a snack bar, and a patio. If you are anywhere near Guelph and seeking a tee time at a fun course, Wildwinds Golf Links is an ideal choice for players of varied skill levels.
