Maple Moor Golf Course in White Plains, New York is one of six impressive courses operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. Located just off the Hutchinson River Parkway, it s a popular place to play with a loyal following among Westchester County golfers who enjoy its sporty variety and the challenge of negotiating its tight fairways. Maple Moor Golf Course, which takes its name from the abundance of maple trees on the site, is the oldest of the county s playing fields. Designed by course architect Tom Winton, the layout rambles in tranquil surroundings on 140 acres of what was a historic farm. Maple Moor Golf Course was a nine-hole private layout before Westchester County took it over in 1925 and it became a full eighteen in 1927. In recent years the parkland-style course has benefited from significant renovations that saw the addition of new bunkers, cart paths, irrigation and drainage systems, and general improvements to the playing field. With three sets of tee markers, Maple Moor Golf Course can be played at 5,309 yards from the forward tees, 6,035 yards from the middle, and 6,374 yards from the back. Since par is 71, the middle tee markers challenge many players for distance. The two toughest par 4s on the front nine measure 380+ yards, while the back nine boasts a couple of par 4s that measure 427 yards and 407 yards, respectively. Maple Moor Golf Course mixes things up nicely with a drivable par 4 and a short par 3. Additionally, only one of the three par 5s tops 500 yards. Most players will likely have more trouble keeping the ball in the fairway on this narrowest of the Westchester County courses.Thankfully, the tree-lined fairways are actually a little roomier than they first appear. Water comes into play on only about three holes. The greens are a strong suit of Maple Moor Golf Course. The putting surfaces are surprisingly large and varied some are rather flat, others have significant slopes and undulations. Most players at Maple Moor Golf Course comment favorably about the greens and the overall condition of the course. Take heart, walkers--the playing field occupies gently rolling terrain, and with greens and tees in close proximity, this is an ideal test to tackle without a golf cart. Practice facilities are limited there s just a putting green. You ll find the pro shop on the ground floor of the modest clubhouse. There s a restaurant located above the shop but it is a separate entity from the golf course.
