East Orange Golf Course is a sporty, municipally-owned golf course with a devoted following in Short Hills, New Jersey. Golf on the site, which is near the Garden State Parkway and I-280, dates back to 1926. That s when Tom Bendelow, a prolific Scottish-America Golden Age architect (nicknamed The Johnny Appleseed of American golf ), laid out the course. For years the golf grounds were neglected, but Stephen Kay performed a much-needed renovation in 2015 that has revitalized, modernized and improved the playing field while retaining its vintage feel. East Orange Golf Course is a short and fun layout with no houses around. Enveloped by mature trees, the par-70 layout features three sets of tee markers that enable play from as short as 4,725 yards and as long as 5,687 yards. The course is well suited for novices, families, and anyone looking for a shorter test that is quite relaxing. In fact, the flat playing field is largely devoid of trouble other than rough and trees. There are no water hazards on the property and just a few sand traps to help defend par. The greens present some challenges because they are elevated, but they don t have any dramatic undulations or slopes. East Orange Golf Course is a very straightforward layout with a few attractive doglegs to lend variety to the game. The course spreads out nicely and is well suited for walking. Chances are you ll see players opting to make their way around on foot. Stephen Kay s improvements included building two new holes, resodding the greens with a better strain of bentgrass, rebuilding the tee boxes and bunkers, adding a new irrigation system, and creating new practice facilities. For those who like to warm up before their round, East Orange Golf Course has a driving range, chipping green and putting green. The club also boasts a new clubhouse with a rather spartan golf shop and a restaurant. East Orange Golf Course isn t the type of course that will challenge low handicap players, but it is a short, attractive, and tranquil layout suitable for all levels of players, and it can be a nice introduction to the game for new players.
