Carved out of beautiful rolling hills and wetlands, Rocky River Golf Club is one of the top golf courses open to the public in the Charlotte area. The course, which opened in 1997, was designed by Dan Maples, who was born in Pinehurst and has crafted many great courses in the Carolinas. The par-72 layout plays 6,970 yards from the back tees, and there are three other sets, starting at 4,654 yards. Rated more than 4 1/2 stars on GolfPass, Rocky River is a course that never gets old. The variety of holes, conditioning and scenery are superb. And the course is not only challenging, but fun for every level of players. Some of the highlights include the par-5 third, which has a massive boulder in the middle of the fairway. Players can use it for guidance, but certainly want to avoid it. The 15th is a gorgeous par-3 hole with water left of the green and a bunker right of it. And the par-5 18th features an intimidating tee shot with a carry over a stream and a well-protected green with water that catches anything long. In addition to the course, Rocky River also has great practice facilities that include a practice green, driving range and chipping area. Lessons are also available from the professional staff. Inside the clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop. And the Stonehouse Grille is a terrific 19th hole. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it's also a great spot to watch sports. The facility can also play host to banquets or special events.
