Nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, Chestatee Golf Club is a beautiful course that is fun to play. Located an hour from Atlanta in Dawsonville, this once exclusively private club has become a favorite tee time in North Georgia. Dennis Griffiths, a course architect who did very fine work in Georgia throughout his career (two of note--Chateau Elan Resort outside of Atlanta and St. Marlo s in Duluth), considered Chestatee Golf Club to be among his most memorable designs. Chestatee gained considerable national attention soon after it opened in 2000, as it earned a spot on various lists of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play. Carved out of a forest as part of a residential golf course community, the course makes superb use of the up and down terrain to provide a test of impressive variety and scenic splendor. Chestatee Golf Club's holes run uphill and downhill and move in many different directions. While some tests are fairly wide, others are quite narrow and start far back in chutes of tall Georgia pines. Water, in the form of creeks and ponds, enters the fray on six holes, most of which are on the front nine. Chestatee Golf Club is a tough challenge but it is manageable if you select an appropriate distance to play from. Thanks to four sets of tee markers and four additional combo options on the scorecard, there's a choice for everyone between the 4,785-yards forward markers and the 6,663-yard tips. Among the standout holes are the long dogleg par-4 8th, which has a reputation for being one of the hardest tests in all of Georgia, and the signature 17th, a par 3 that boasts a breathtaking view of the Chestatee River as it meets Lake Lanier. Chances are you ll also see plenty of wildlife, including deer and wild turkeys, during your round. Practice facilities at Chestatee Golf Club include a driving range, chipping green with sand bunker, and putting green. The clubhouse is home to a pro shop and a restaurant and bar that is an ideal spot to toast your round, as the recent clearing of some trees has opened up the golf course view. If you are anywhere near Dawsonville, make a tee time for Chestatee Golf Club. It s a favorite place to play in the North Georgia Mountains.
